At 160 International Boardwalk there is a door next to Scholb Brewing with no sign on it. On weekends it's sometimes open. When it is, South Bay Sushi Club is serving. When it's closed, the place doesn't seem to exist. In his October 7 A La Carte column for Easy Reader, Richard Foss wrote that he walked the Boardwalk looking for it until the Scholb staff laughed and pointed at the unmarked door.
This fall, most of the new places you can eat at along Redondo's Pacific Coast Highway and near the water opened quietly, much like that door. The names people are talking about, a new Mickey's and a reopened Coyote Cantina, are further off than the talk implies. If you're planning a dinner out in October, the quiet list is the one to use.
The quiet openings on South PCH
Two of this season's openings sit about a block apart on the stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in southeast Redondo.
Thai House Kitchen, 1914 S. Pacific Coast Hwy., Unit 2B. This is an offshoot of Baramee in San Pedro, and Easy Reader describes the menu as the same pan-Thai approach. In June, WhatNow Los Angeles projected it would open "in about two months." No public announcement marked the actual opening day. By the time Foss wrote his October column, it was already serving, in what he called a much more spartan room than the original.
Gravewave Coffee, 1808 S. Pacific Coast Hwy. This one is a goth-themed coffeehouse, and Easy Reader notes it is permanent, not a Halloween pop-up. In a Voyage LA interview, Erika Corona says she and her partner Matt opened their first brick-and-mortar shop in Redondo Beach in July 2026. The shop's own site lists Stereoscope beans, ceremonial matcha, signature horchata drinks, and desserts from Boule de Pain. It also offers free Wi-Fi and pitches the room as an inclusive place to work. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It's closed Mondays.
Gravewave opened in July, has been pouring coffee for about three months, and is now advertising a "Grand Opening Celebration" for Saturday, October 31. The party comes after the opening. Anyone driving past since summer could already have gone in.
The Boardwalk door, and why its hours bend
South Bay Sushi Club follows the same pattern, closer to the water. The South Bay Club reported it operating at 160 International Boardwalk by September 18. That report gave no opening day.
Its posted schedule is weekends only, nominally 1 to 8 p.m. In practice, Easy Reader reported that one recent weekend it sold out so early that it closed before 6 p.m. on both days. So the posted hours describe the most it will be open, not a promise. Plan for a Saturday lunch, not a late Sunday dinner.
Riviera Village's reopening already happened
One Riviera Village story is already finished. Hennessey's Tavern at 1712 S. Catalina Ave. closed for a kitchen remodel that Easy Reader said would upgrade and enlarge the kitchen. It held its reopening ceremony on Thursday, October 8. The Redondo location page now lists daily service again.
That accounts for four open places, three of them new, and none launched with a big announcement. The two names on the waiting list are a different story.
Mickey's is coming, on a longer clock than the chatter suggests
Easy Reader's October column says the long-vacant Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at Elena and Avenue I "will soon become a branch of Mickey's Deli." The deli's own announcement, posted on its website from its Instagram feed, gives a longer timeline:
"Guess what, South Redondo? Mickey's is opening our third location in 2027! Follow along as we bring Mickey's to the corner of PCH & Avenue I."
For neighbors, the year matters more than the word "soon." Mickey's currently has two stores, at 101 Hermosa Avenue in Hermosa Beach and at 2716 Artesia Blvd. in North Redondo. Until the third one opens, a Mickey's order from the south end still means a drive to one of those two. One detail is unsettled. Easy Reader places the new store at Elena and Avenue I, and Mickey's says PCH and Avenue I. The published sources don't confirm whether both describe the same storefront.
Coyote Cantina has a target, not a date
The other awaited name is at the north end of the same highway. Coyote Cantina is at 531 N. Pacific Coast Hwy., Ste. B, at PCH and Beryl. Its website has a "We Will Be Back Soon" banner. The site describes more than 25 years in Redondo Beach. It says the place is preparing to reopen with a team of local South Bay professionals and a menu that keeps the longtime flavors while adding refreshed dishes.
Easy Reader traced the closure to years of deferred maintenance and reported that the operators are hoping for a soft opening in November. That is a hope. No published source gives a day, and the operators' own page doesn't name one either. For now, a November visit is something to check on, not something to book.
Halloween puts both lists on one Saturday
The calendar shows the difference clearly. On Saturday, October 31, Gravewave holds its grand-opening celebration on South PCH. The same afternoon, the Riviera Village Association runs its 2026 Halloween Trick or Treat from 3 to 8 p.m., with candy handed out until 6 p.m. or until it runs out. Both events are close to the South PCH storefronts, so one Halloween afternoon can cover trick-or-treating in the Village and a stop for the coffeehouse's party.
Two places where you can sit down and eat on Halloween weekend opened this year with little notice. South Bay Sushi Club and its unmarked door are on the Boardwalk if the weekend allows. The two names people mention most, Mickey's and Coyote, won't be serving.
The holiday anchor is set
The next fixed date in Riviera Village is the 2026 Holiday Stroll on Thursday, December 3, from 5 to 9 p.m. The Association lists these details:
- Street closures: S. Catalina Avenue is closed to cars from Avenue I to S. Elena, and so is Avenue I between S. Catalina and S. Elena.
- On the street: a carousel, the Jolly Maker's Market on Avenue I, Santa and the Grinch, photo booths, and large lighted holiday lettering.
- In the shops: stores stay open late and serve refreshments.
The closure covers the block of Avenue I where the Mickey's announcement points, but this year's Stroll will still walk past a storefront that isn't open yet. Hennessey's is a short walk away at 1712 S. Catalina, and its location page lists daily service. The Association suggests booking dinner ahead for the night.
Where things stand on October 12
- Open: Thai House Kitchen, 1914 S. PCH; Gravewave Coffee, 1808 S. PCH, Tuesday through Sunday; South Bay Sushi Club, 160 International Boardwalk, weekends while supplies last; Hennessey's Tavern, 1712 S. Catalina Ave., reopened October 8.
- Hoped for in November, no date set: Coyote Cantina, 531 N. PCH.
- Announced for 2027: Mickey's Deli, PCH and Avenue I.
- On the calendar: Gravewave's grand-opening celebration and the Riviera Village Trick or Treat on October 31; the Holiday Stroll on December 3.
Merritt & Sanderson keeps track of which Redondo storefronts are open, which are only announced, and what that means for the blocks around them. If you'd like that read on the Riviera Village and PCH blocks around your own home, we're glad to talk it through.
